eating disorder and body image counselling in bc
having spent my early adulthood overcoming anorexia and bulimia, i was inspired to pursue an undergraduate degree in women’s studies, which allowed me to explore the cultural, social, and psychological factors that shape body image and self-worth — not only for women and girls, but for people of all genders. i learned how societal pressures, media messaging, and cultural norms contribute to disordered eating and self-esteem.
following this, i completed a master’s degree in counselling, where i developed clinical skills to help individuals navigating eating disorders and body image challenges. as a clinical counsellor and sex therapist, i provide trauma-informed and somatic support, guiding clients toward recovery, self-awareness, and long-term wellbeing. my clinical knowledge and lived experience help people reclaim their voice and sense of self.
understanding eating disorders
eating disorders are often thought of as purely physical, but they are also mental, emotional, and spiritual experiences that happen to be expressed through the body. common disorders include:
- anorexia nervosa
- bulimia nervosa
- binge-eating disorder
while individuals experience these struggles personally, our culture often sets the stage for them. advertisers, media, and societal pressures profit from insecurity and the fantasy of perfection, sending constant messages that we are “getting it wrong” or must strive to “get it right.”
the cultural influence on body image
perfection is a losing game. the preoccupation with personal imperfection drives consumption and self-criticism, keeping individuals trapped in harmful cycles. awareness is the first step toward reclaiming power from eating disorders — the difference between being caught in a behaviour and observing a behaviour. recognizing the influence of culture allows clients to gain distance, insight, and agency in their recovery.
the path to recovery
hidden behind puzzling or harmful behaviours is the brilliant self — resilient, beautiful, and waiting to be rediscovered. recovery involves approaching eating disorders from multiple angles:
- physical
- mental
- emotional
- spiritual
through one-on-one counselling, i help clients rebuild self-esteem, body trust, and wellbeing.
